How to Extract the Subject from an iPhone or iPad Photo in Safari

Posted on April 4, 2025April 4, 2025 by Sara

Despite all of the new features iOS 17 and iOS 18 have brought to the table, iOS 16 still stands tall as one of the most jam-packed releases ever, with features you presumably still interact with everyday.

iOS 16 brought some bangers: the overhauled lockscreen, editing and unsending messages, live activities and more. One sleeper feature was an improvement to iOS 15’s Visual Lookup, which will detect topics in your images and let you to take them out and share them, background-free.

iOS 16 extended on Visual Lookup by allowing you to get the subjects from photographs from websites — as long as you were using Safari. If you were unaware that you could accomplish this or just need a reminder, we’re going to lay it all out for you below.

For more, don’t miss the newest in iOS 18.4.

How to trim photos in Safari on iOS or iPad OS

In the Safari web browser on your iPhone or iPad, find any image and press your finger down on it for approximately a second. The picture should isolate beneath your finger, and a rapid action menu will display, with numerous possibilities. Now, the one you want to utilize is Copy topic, which will copy the topic of the photo to your clipboard.

The topic of the left-hand shot has been isolated and placed into a message.
Select a photograph with a distinct topic and backdrop because, regrettably, you have no influence over the subject choice. (I decided to employ this feature with a skateboarder in the foreground of the image above.)

Once you hit Copy topic, you may share the clipped topic with another person by going into a message and pasting it in. If you want to preserve the clipped subject for yourself, you may also place it into a saved note. Since the clipping won’t always be flawless, choose a picture with a big, clear subject—ideally one with a consistent backdrop.
