One of the best ways to differentiate various applications on your iPhone is to change the alert tones for each app. In this manner, you may detect whether you get a text message instead of an email without having to take your iPhone out of your pocket. Additionally, until Apple introduced iOS 17.2 in 2023, you were unable to alter the general alert notification, even though you could always modify the tones for specific iPhone applications and notifications.
Some iPhone owners complained online about Apple altering the default warning tone when iOS 17 was released in 2023. One participant said they depended on an earlier tone to notify them of their parental care obligations, while others claimed the new alarm tone was insufficiently loud to wake them up in the event that their security system went off. The default tone may now be altered to better fit your requirements.
To modify the default notification tone on your iPhone, follow these steps.
Changing your default alarm tone is simple.
- Go to Settings.
- Haptics & Tap Sounds.
- Select Default Warnings. By selecting Classic toward the bottom of the screen, you may explore earlier tones (like Bell) or preview and choose familiar-sounding warnings (like Tri-tone) from Default warnings. Another option is None, which will turn off your alarm tone but keep your haptic alert—the alert’s vibration pattern—activated. The iPhone’s default alarm tone menu

If you’d like, you may also modify your haptic alerts. How to modify the tone of your haptic alert - Go to Settings.
- Haptics & Tap Sounds.
- Select Default Warnings.
- Press Haptics. You may choose vibration patterns from this menu, such as Accent, which is a brief single vibration, or SOS, which vibrates SOS in Morse code. Your alarm tone and haptics will coordinate if you choose Synchronized. You may choose None if you don’t want a vibration. Additionally, you may design your own vibration pattern. In the Haptics menu, tap design New Vibration. This will bring up a screen that says, “Tap to create a vibration pattern.” You may push and hold to create a longer, single vibration or swiftly touch your screen to create a brief vibration pattern. Once you’re done, choose Save. Then, give your pattern a name, and it will be chosen as your default alert haptic.
